Zemer ("we", "us") provides a free Jewish music streaming app and this website, zemer.io. This policy explains what information we collect and how we use it. The short version: we collect detailed usage, device and network information to run, improve and protect Zemer, we never sell data, and the app works without an account.

Information we collect on this website

• Analytics: We use Umami, a privacy-focused analytics tool, to count page visits. It does not use cookies and does not collect personal information or track you across other sites.
• Contact form: If you contact us, we receive the name, email address, and message you choose to send. We use it only to respond to you.

Information collected by the app

The Zemer Android app does not require an account — most features work without signing in, and your library, playlists, listening and search history, and downloads are stored only on your device. The app collects or transmits the following:

• Music recognition (microphone): When you use "Recognize music," the app records a short audio sample, converts it into an acoustic fingerprint, and sends that fingerprint to Apple's Shazam service to identify the song. The microphone is used only during recognition, and the raw recording is not stored.
• Optional settings sync: To keep your content-filter settings (for example KidZone / parental controls) consistent across your devices, you can enable sync. By default this creates an anonymous account (through Google Firebase sign-in) that does not use your Google account, name, or email address; if you choose to sign in with Google instead, your email address is stored with your settings. For each synced account we store the account identifier and your content-filter settings, when the settings were created and last changed, and for each of its devices a device identifier, the device name, manufacturer, model, Android and app version, and when the device was first seen, last seen and last synced. This is stored on Zemer's own server. While signed in to the sync account, these settings are locked from being changed on your device.
• Usage and device analytics: To improve search results, build Zemer's own recommendations, and run and protect the service, the app sends usage data to Zemer's own analytics server, linked to a randomly generated install identifier: the app version and build, search terms, plays (which track, how many seconds were listened, and where playback started), search-result taps, and library actions such as favorites, downloads, playlist additions, and shares, each with a timestamp. With it, the app sends details about your device (manufacturer, brand, model, Android version and security patch level, hardware and processor type, screen, memory and free storage, language, time zone, network type and mobile carrier, battery level and charging state, whether Google Play services, root access or Shizuku are present, the app's integrity checks, when the app was first installed and last updated, and how it was installed), the size of your library (songs, downloads, playlists and liked songs), and your app settings, including your content filters and KidZone. With every upload our server also records the network (IP) address it came from, the country and network provider of that address, and the app's user agent. This information is linked to your install identifier, and may be combined with the crash reports and network records from the same install or address. It is stored on Zemer's own server and is never sold.
• Crash & diagnostics: When the app crashes or hits an error, it sends a report to Zemer's own server. Reports include your install identifier, device information (such as model and Android version), the app version, recent technical logs from the app (which can include what was being played or searched, and any network addresses or account identifiers that appear in them), and the network (IP) address and country the report was sent from. Access tokens and other credentials are removed before a report is stored. Reports are linked to your install's usage data and are never sold.
• Network records: Every request the app or this website makes to Zemer's own servers is recorded with its network (IP) address, country and network provider, the time, the service called, the full web address requested including its parameters, the app version, build and user agent, the language and referring page, the identifiers the app signs its requests with (including its per-install identifier), the device identifier the app sends when streaming, the content of the request itself (for example what you searched for, a report or settings you sent, or an upload), the time it took and how much data was sent back, and whether the request came from a genuine copy of the Zemer app. This includes every song streamed or downloaded through Zemer's servers. We use these records to operate, improve and protect Zemer: among other things, to detect and block abuse, automated scraping, attacks, and unauthorized or modified copies of the app. These records are kept indefinitely, are never sold, and are not shared with anyone except where required by law.
• Streaming: To play music, the app sends playback requests to YouTube / Google using a session identifier.
• Downloads: We count app downloads in aggregate; this does not identify you personally.

What we don't do

• We do not sell or rent your information to anyone, or share it for marketing.
• Passwords and sign-in tokens stay on your device; we never store them.
• We do not use advertising identifiers or show ads.

Third-party services

The website and app rely on a small number of service providers to function, including Cloudflare (hosting, content delivery and security), Google Firebase (optional sign-in), GitHub (encrypted backups of our servers' data), YouTube / Google (music streaming), Apple's Shazam service (song recognition), and Google Fonts. Each receives only the data needed to deliver its service. See Google's Privacy Policy and Apple's Privacy Policy.

Children

Zemer is intended for a general audience age 13 and older and is not directed to children under 13. KidZone is a parental curation tool for use under adult supervision.

Data retention and your rights

Data stored on your device is removed when you clear the app's data or uninstall the app. Contact messages are kept only as long as needed to handle your request. To delete information synced to your account (such as your settings and device list), or any other information we hold about you, email support@zemer.io and we will take care of it. Usage and device analytics, crash reports and network records are kept indefinitely to run, improve and protect the service. They are linked to an install identifier and network address rather than to a name, so a deletion request needs enough detail for us to find them; where the law allows, we may keep them even after a deletion request.

Changes to this policy

If we change this policy, we will update this page and the date above.
